Carthage Jail

We had a fabulous time here. The spirit was so strong throughout the jail house. The day we happened to visit the jail was the the exact day 165 years ago that Joesph Smith was killed here. So, you can imagine why we felt a strong presence him and spirit. Jenna was so good for us. She was so curious about everything we saw. We almost didn't get to go on the tour. We didn't know it was going to be so busy that day and when we got there, there was a long wait. Since we were just passing through we told the sisters it was okay and we'd come later because it was scorching hot outside and our cats were in the truck. She told us to hold on just a minuet. After coming back she told us we could skip the 15min presentation and she'd give us our own quick personal tour between the groups. She explained that she knew we needed to be there today. Especially after coming from so far way. It was so kind of them to do that for us. No doubt it made it feel even more personal and special to us. It was wonderful. We are so thankful for the experience and kindness of the sister missionaries at Carthage jail. It's nice to know we got to be a part of the special events on that special day. What a blessing. Daniel asked if anything was original still in the jailhouse? The sister giving the tour told us yes, the windows, flooring, fire places and framing in the rooms and doors are all the original from the day the building was built. Some exterior and interior have been renovated. We thought that was so amazing.The doors are also original. This is the original bullet hole that hit the door killing Hyrum Smith. It was surreal to see and touch.The top window is the window Joesph Smith fell from after being shot a few times.He landed down by the well.
